The second case of Detective Li Jen and American forensic doctor Margaret Campbell. Circumstances have separated Li and Margaret, but the investigation of a series of ritual murders in Beijing brings them back together, whether they like it or not. The first three victims were drugged, bound, marked with a poster bearing a nickname and number, and then skillfully beheaded. The fourth victim was executed in the same manner, but this time it was an American diplomat of Chinese descent. Everyone is puzzled as to why Yuan Chao returned to Beijing after several decades in America, settled for a low-paying bureaucratic position, and rented an apartment in a shabby part of the city – primarily, why he died in the same bizarre way as the other three Chinese victims. Li and Margaret are on the trail of the truth, but at the same time, they are dangerously close to the murderer, who is ready to sacrifice anyone to protect his secret.
