When shy Bastian Balthazar Bux one day flees from his classmates who bully him, he decides to hide in a second-hand bookstore. Safe behind the shop's doors, he is captivated by a book featuring two snakes biting each other's tails, titled The NeverEnding Story. The boy cannot resist, and when the bookstore owner is distracted by a phone call, he steals the volume and retreats to his hiding place in the school's attic. Its story tells of the realm of Fantastica, which is slowly falling into Nothingness. As he reads about the rescue mission of the warrior Atreyu, he realizes that the entire narrative also concerns him. He too will have to actively participate to save the realm that has enchanted him and its ruler, the Child Empress. But can he cope with the consequences of his actions in the reality he has created with his wishes, and will he be able to face his dark side? Only then can he return to the world where he belongs...
