HISTORY OF THE CASTLE The late classicist castle is the main landmark of the town of Kamenice nad Lipou in the Pelhřimov region of the Vysočina. The local noble residence has always been connected with the history of the town, first as a Gothic castle, later as a chateau. The original castle was built in the 13th century. The first known holders of the castle were members of the Benešovic family. The most significant member of the family was Dobeš of Bechyně, a confidant of Queen Eliška and advisor to Charles IV. When the Benešovics died out in 1389, the owners of the estate changed rapidly. It wasn't until 1549 that Zdeněk Malovec became the lord of the castle for a longer period. His son Jan reconstructed the castle into a Renaissance chateau with an arcade courtyard and a garden between 1580 and 1583. Further renovations took place under subsequent owners. The tower above the gate was completed in 1744 during the reign of Maria Theresa by Hartig. At that time, the castle was modified in the Baroque style. The castle took on its current classicist appearance between 1806 and 1811 when Prague burgher F. Rilke, the grandfather of poet R. M. Rilke, had it remodeled in the late classicist style. From 1945, it housed a children's health resort. In 1998, it was taken over by the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, which began its reconstruction lasting until 2004 when the castle was opened to the public. The castle in its current form is...
