A love story set against the dramatic backdrop of German history from the late 19th century to the 1970s. Olga is an orphan from a poor background, Herbert is the son of a country farmer; both stand out from the rural environment in which they grow up, and it is their differences that bring them together. Talented and determined, Olga becomes a teacher, while Herbert sets out into the world to contribute to the greatness of Germany. He fights in the colonial army in Africa and wants to explore the Arctic for the glory of Germany. He disappears during a polar expedition. However, Olga's love for Herbert endures until her death, even though she holds ideals that are the opposite of Herbert's; the idea of a Greater Germany terrifies her. And when she dies, her love and secrets resonate into the present day.
