The Flying Hat is the fourteenth big band album by Milan Svoboda. All the tracks on this album are loosely inspired by the melodies of Jaroslav Ježek. However, Milan Svoboda approaches Ježek's themes, which have often become folk tunes, in very diverse ways. Sometimes he openly acknowledges them, while at other times he conceals them. He gives them different tempos, different harmonies, always using only parts of them. Sometimes he clearly quotes the melody, but then immediately changes it. Often, the original motif becomes difficult to recognize. Svoboda does not stick to early swing; he utilizes a wide range of newer genres, creating complex big band compositions full of varied moods. Similarly, other progressive big bands radically reworked pieces by George Gershwin, and we can even look further back in history for comparison: Johann Sebastian Bach also used older chorales to create new works. Milan Svoboda and Kontraband have previously recorded rearranged Christmas songs and carols with notable listener success, and for the Moravian Philharmonic, he arranged and recorded music by The Beatles.
