Jewish legends often have a defensive character, stemming from the eternally unanchored position of the Jews. The contrast between wealth (as a result of the pan-European spiritual connection of Jews) and the fear of violence, poverty, disease, and frequent pogroms is a unifying motif of these legends. It is no wonder that their theme focused primarily on the defense of the right to a homeland and the unique education and religion of the Jews. Alongside this, there appeared an element of moral appeal to human character. We enter a wondrous, bizarre, futile, harsh, yet beautiful world, in the midst of which, behind the gates of the Jewish ghetto (later known as Josefov), lived a closed, powerful, and persecuted nation. A nation that found safe refuge in ancient times only within its world of faith and mystical Kabbalah. The legends from Josefov have survived the ages, just like legendary treasures.
