They were based on cases from the black chronicle. They were first published in book form in 1929 and have since seen many reprints. They inspired audio and television adaptations, as well as film versions. They contain elements of a classic detective story, yet the way Čapek narrates is original. It is characterized by detachment, a sense of humor, and the ability to empathize with the human soul. The author is a genius in understanding human nature and exceptionally handles modern Czech, which has not aged at all since the work's inception.
