Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is a greedy, chauvinistic fool employed at a very successful advertising agency in Chicago, run by Dan Vanamaker (Alan Alda). Women are mostly just tools in his hands, which reinforces his belief that he can maneuver himself into the female atmosphere. He is convinced that he alone deserves the vacant position of creative director at the agency. But to Nick's great surprise and disappointment, the position goes to Darcy Maguire (Helen Hunt), an ambitious career woman who seems destined to be in constant conflict with the egotistical Nick. After an accident in the bathroom (Nick gets electrocuted and falls into the bathtub), he wakes up the next morning to discover that he has the ability to hear what women are thinking. His maid is no longer smirking as usual, and even his doorman doesn't flatter him with compliments about his beautiful backside. This is what these women think, stored only in their minds. Initially, Nick is quite shocked, but soon he is playfully excited at the prospect of knowing everything hidden in a woman's brain. And this comes in very handy in the presence of his colleague Darcy. Suddenly, two rivals become allies.
