Joseph "Dagger" Megessey (Robert De Niro) is a veteran of the Vietnam War. He has countless scars on his soul, yet he enjoys discussing his war experiences with others. David "High Schooler" Flannigan (Ed Harris) tries to drown his burdensome memories in alcohol. Each person copes with war traumas in their own way. After years, the two friends meet again, but a strong tension begins to grow between them. David realizes that Joseph is too vivid a reminder of the worst moments in his life. In the Vietnamese jungle, they lost their friend Bobby, and David no longer wants to endlessly relive his unnecessary death. Therefore, he wishes to distance himself from Joseph, and he is not pleased when his sister Marta feels a strong affection for Joseph.
