The Apatosaurus is one of the best-known dinosaurs. It lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 150 million years ago, in North America, particularly in what is now the central United States, including Colorado, Oklahoma and Utah. It commonly reached a length of 21–23 metres, a width of 16 metres and a height of 21 metres, with an estimated weight of 25–35 tonnes. As a herbivore, it had to consume enormous quantities of plant food. Its spoon-shaped teeth, located at the front of its jaws, were well suited to processing food mechanically, but as with other sauropods, it remains a mystery how such a small head and mouth could gather enough food to sustain such a huge body. The Apatosaurus had four pillar-like legs, each with five toes. Its whip-like tail contained 82 vertebrae and, according to palaeontologists, served mainly for defence or perhaps as a means of communication. This remains only a theory, however, and cannot be experimentally confirmed.
