A Christmas Murder in a Locked Library or an Experience that Led the Famous Writer P. D. James to Write Detective Stories. The British author Phyllis Dorothy James (1920–2014) is often regarded as the successor to Agatha Christie. She wrote around twenty books, most of which received favorable reviews. She became famous for her detective novels featuring the character of the slightly reserved, intelligent, and handsome Commissioner Adam Dalgliesh. Film adaptations of her thrilling stories also gained popularity. Czech Radio produced the dramatic series Cover Her Face (2014), a reading from the book A Taste for Death (2020), and a dramatization of the short story A Christmas Murder (2020). Although P. D. James enjoyed storytelling since childhood, she only began writing in the mid-1950s. In her detective novels, she drew on her experiences as a civil servant in the criminal section of the Ministry of the Interior. However, her own experience significantly influenced her work. A case from 1940 is depicted in the short story A Christmas Murder as a memory of her youth. Unexpectedly widowed at that time, her grandmother, whom she barely knew, invited her to a Christmas celebration.
