Poet, prose writer, and translator Jan Zábrana, together with Josef Škvorecký, wrote three detective stories set in First Republic Czechoslovakia: Murder for Happiness (1962), Murder with a Guarantee (1964), and Murder by Proxy (1967). The central character in all three parts is Doctor Jaroslav Pivoňka, a private detective from the Ostrozrak agency, who gradually evolves from an inexperienced rookie into a true criminal investigator. In his search and uncovering of connections, he is assisted by his dear Boženka, who, unlike the educated philosopher, is a simple girl but naturally intelligent.
