A thrilling story from Victorian England. ENGLISH NOVELIST WILKIE COLLINS is often regarded by literary critics, alongside E. A. Poe and Émile Gaboriau, as a founder of the detective novel genre. His most famous novel, The Moonstone, was declared by poet T. S. Eliot to be the best detective story of all time. This opinion has been supported by others as well. What is certain is that Collins himself had no idea he was writing detective stories. In his time, he was one of the sought-after and very popular authors of the so-called sensational novel, which grew out of the traditions of realism and was spiced up with selections of contemporary criminal events and unrestrained social criticism. The novel The Woman in White precedes The Moonstone and is more of a story with a mystery than a full-fledged detective novel. Nevertheless, it does not lack a detective plot. Besides that, we find elements of romance and horror. The complex plot takes us into Victorian England. It consists of the love story of a wealthy girl, Laura, and a young drawing teacher, Walter, but the main axis is the plot in which the incredible resemblance of Laura to a poor girl, Anna, plays a central role.
