Description: When Henrik Ibsen published Hedda Gabler in 1890, critics labeled the title character a monster. In connection with its premiere at the National Theatre in 1911, F. X. Šalda wrote about the protagonist that she is a 'manifestation of a devilish woman, barren and parched within, a house inhabited by all the demons of perversity, corrupted and poisoned from the root, bringing death to the man upon whom she casts her gaze...' Over time, however, this deadly femme fatale has become increasingly attractive, and today her dramatic story is among the most frequently performed works by Ibsen. The production filmed in 2000 by Czech Radio fully utilized the possibilities that the ambiguity of this drama offers for depicting the modern woman. Director Hana Kofránková sensitively shortened the modern translation by František Fröhlich and had a fortunate hand in selecting the interpreters. Thanks to the energetic yet soberly civil and psychologically nuanced performance of Vilma Cibulková in the lead role, a portrait of an intelligent woman emerges before us, one who does not want to succumb to illusions, but rather demands much of herself, the world, and her partners...
