Glassworks appeared in the Black Forest in southwestern Germany as early as the 13th century. Small settlements often arose around them, serving as homes for glassmakers and their families. Then came the charcoal and potash producers, who supplied essential raw materials for the glass industry. Wood was an indispensable resource for glassmaking.
