This recording brings together Antonín Dvořák’s Cypresses, Evening Songs and Gypsy Songs, performed by tenor Pavol Bršlík with pianist Robert Pechanec. Dvořák described Cypresses, composed at the age of 23 while deeply in love with the young actress Josefina Čermáková, as expressing the thoughts of a young man in love. Although an early work with certain imperfections, he returned to it repeatedly and used its motifs in many mature compositions. Dvořák set the equally love-struck poetry of Vítězslav Hálek in his Evening Songs, while the poems by Adolf Heyduk that inspired Gypsy Songs express not only romantic love, but also love of music and nature and a longing for freedom. The song Songs My Mother Taught Me became one of Dvořák’s best-known works. Pavol Bršlík, a celebrated tenor on the world’s opera and concert stages, devotes himself to song as well as opera. Together with Robert Pechanec, he brings all the passion and many shades of love in Dvořák’s songs to this recording.
