Synopsis
In September 1940, Oldřich Nový staged a successful adaptation of Jan Patrný's play 'Men Don't Age' at his theater. The production featured a witty premise and an equally amusing twist – about a man who gains the affection and eventually the love of women from three generations of the same family. In 1942, Vladimír Slavínský rewrote this comedy for film and directed it, casting renowned National Theatre actor Jan Pivec in the lead role. A week before the film's premiere in April 1942, Pivec commented in Filmový kurýr: 'The role in this film was particularly gratifying: to play three roles in one person, trying to penetrate the emotional life of an inexperienced, hopelessly in love student, later a mature, active man, and finally a somewhat resigned and calm fifty-something. All these were distinctly character-driven roles. I avoided the usual lover’s framework, hence in the first phase (student), I portrayed it with unintended comedy, in the second – to be honest – I actually played myself. However, there was another delicate point: the audience should not get the impression that engineer Jarský is just an eternal Don Juan chasing girls, even as his hair grays. Therefore, in my third and final form, I tried to depict a man who is no longer pursuing a young woman, but is rather pursued by her.' Jan Pivec's charming co-stars were Zita Kabátová, Jana Romanová, and Jarmila Smejkalová (in her first significant film role).
