Synopsis
The owner of a boat rental and ferryman, Ryba, has spent his entire life in a cottage by the river, which often becomes fatal for both boaters and suicides. However, thanks to Ryba's efforts, many drowning individuals are rescued, making Ryba a highly popular figure in the region. Just as the eccentric man prepares to celebrate his hundredth rescued victim, he learns about the planned regulation of the river, which threatens his livelihood. Coincidentally, the regulation is supervised by a young engineer named Pánek, who has fallen in love with Ryba's daughter. Upon hearing this news, Ryba thoroughly indulges in alcohol in several nearby taverns. Meanwhile, the long-awaited hundredth victim drowns in the river. It turns out that the engineer Pánek becomes his rescuer...
