Description

Krakatit + School for Fathers / Skola otcu DVD
Synopsis
Krakatit

Based on a novel by Karel Capek, a prominent Czech writer of the early 20th century, who coined the word robot for his play R.U.R., the story revolves around a discovery of Krakatit-a powerful explosive by Prokop, the main character of the movie. After an accidental explosion in the lab, exhausted Prokop slips in and out of dream-like hallucinations. He later realizes that in his altered state of consciousness he had given the formula for making Krakatit to one of his colleagues, and he tries to stop its spread before it is too late. But there are too many dark, powerful forces interested in the ultimate explosive.

Synopsis
School for Fathers / Skola otcu

After a failed marriage, Teacher Pelikán moves from Brno to a small town. His initial impressions of the new workplace aren't encouraging. The young school director prioritizes statistics and ceremonial speeches over actual teaching. Pelikán discovers that the school's shortcomings are masked by ideological slogans about "class consciousness," exploited by the son of the district committee chairman, Vašík Janouch. The children lack expected knowledge, prompting Pelikán to lower some grades, including Vašík's. His strictness earns no sympathy from parents, and Janouch's wife organizes a campaign against him. Pelikán finds solace in young colleague Andulka Novotná. Despite parental anger, Pelikán gains the trust of the children. However, another scandal drains his strength in the fight against dishonesty and hypocrisy. He defends little Lojzík Kotačka, whose bike Vašík destroys, and rushes to help Lojzík's endangered mother. A meeting is called, demanding Pelikán's dismissal. Though Janouch supports him, it's too late—disheartened, Pelikán has already left.
