Faithless Marijka (Marijka Nevěrnice), a distinguished cinematic endeavor by Vladislav Vančura, adapts a story by Ivan Olbracht and unfolds in the erstwhile Carpathian Ruthenia. This film transcends mere depiction of poverty and backwardness, delving into a world of intense passions leading to irreversible actions. 
Vančura's directorial approach was groundbreaking for its time. He strived to rid the narrative of unnecessary sentimentality, employing entirely unknown actors who spoke in an almost incomprehensible dialect. This bold move aimed to unravel the complex emotional tapestry experienced by the protagonist. Notably, the film dared to highlight bold erotic elements, particularly audacious for the early 1930s. 
The film stands out for its ambition, especially considering it was produced outside major studios. However, it faced public indifference, possibly due to its reduced linguistic accessibility. Vančura's work offered something distinct and unconventional compared to the contemporaneous cinematic landscape. It marked a significant inclusion of folklore and literature in Czech cinema, as seen in similar quality works like Úlehla's "Disappearing World" (1932), Plicka's "Zem spieva" (1933), and later Weiss's "Song of a Sad Country" (1937).
Faithless Marijka is now recognized as a highly esteemed art film, based on a story by Ivan Olbracht, who also made a cameo appearance as a tourist with a camera. The authenticity of the locations – Carpathian Ruthenia, Kolchava, and the Black River Valley – added a nearly genuine touch, with the filming style resembling modern-day documentary filmmaking. 
Interestingly, the film is often discussed as a collaborative project among three writers: Olbracht, Nový, and Vančura, hence its designation as "The Film of Three Writers." My personal rating for the film is 8/10, particularly for the challenging task of directing non-professional actors, the remarkably sharp image quality, and outstanding cinematography. The movie beautifully narrates a ballad-like story from the lives of simple people, making it a unique and valuable contribution to the world of cinema.
