Description
Your Money or Your Life / Penize nebo zivot DVD
Synopsis
Tonda, driven to theft by poverty, and Pepík, who married into wealth only to inherit an unfaithful wife and a horde of in-laws that nearly drove him to suicide, find themselves in equally dire straits. Their relationship becomes the center of a wild chase for a stolen jewel, which they constantly try to pass off to each other. The second film by Voskovec and Werich, "Peníze nebo život," was released in 1932, a year after their debut film "Powder and Gas." The plot is simpler than their first film, allowing the creators to focus on numerous comedic situations and gags. Directed again by Jindřich Honzl, the film features music by Jaroslav Ježek, including the evergreen "Life is Just a Coincidence" performed by Hana Vítová and Ljuba Hermanová, as well as the waltz "Rej vážek," the beguine "Hydroplan," and the march "One Hundred Percent Men." Notably, the role of Pepík's unfaithful wife is played by former model Eliška Pleyová, née Plachová. While received with mixed reviews by critics, the film remains a classic in the golden age of pre-war Czech cinema.
