Description
Valley of the Bees / Udoli vcel DVD
Synopsis
The story, directed by František Vláčil and written by Vladimír Körner, is set in the latter half of the 13th century. Young Ondřej of Vlkov, a Czech nobleman's son, was sent to a monastic order as a child, not by choice but as a sacrificial offering to atone for his father's violent act committed against him, making him a double victim. After ten years of ascetic life, Ondřej realizes there is another world, another life beyond the rigid walls of the monastic castle. He succumbs to the call of home, the call of his native Valley of the Bees, and attempts to return. It seems he might have more luck than Brother Rotgier, whose attempt to escape ended in a brutal death. However, the power of the order proves stronger, and religious fanaticism triumphs once again over the hopeless attempts of an individual to rebel against the force of dogma intertwined with power.
