Description
Tonka of the Gallows / Tonka Sibenice DVD
Synopsis
Country girl Tonka becomes a prostitute in a brothel after arriving in Prague. She misses her home and, upon receiving leave, visits her mother. At home, she reunites with her former boyfriend Jan, who still loves her and wants to marry her. Although happy with Jan, memories of her life in Prague haunt her. Not wanting to make Jan unhappy, she returns to Prague. The police are searching for a woman among the prostitutes willing to spend the last night with a condemned murderer. Feeling sorry for the convict, Tonka volunteers. Upon her return to the brothel, everyone shuns and despises her. Tonka is dismissed, ends up on the streets, and falls further into despair. As the first Czech sound film, its sound scenes were later shot at Gaumont Studios in Joinville near Paris in Czech, German, and French after the Kavalírka studios burned down. The premiere took place at the Alfa cinema on Wenceslas Square. The NFA archives the complete French version titled Tonischka, while only 15 meters of the Czech version have survived, featuring Karel Hašler singing the song Hradčany krásné.
