Synopsis
Concertmaster Karel Mašek is an alcoholic, just like engineer Danda and other regulars at the pub U Kroců - Taupe and Rendl. Mašek returns home in the morning from the pub, promising his wife he will stop drinking. However, he shows up to the orchestra rehearsal drunk again, and the other musicians refuse to play with him. Danda returns home without his briefcase and heads to the pub again in the morning despite having an important meeting at work. He is demoted to a menial position but does not admit it at home. His daughter wants to get married, and his son got drunk and spent the night in a drunk tank. Mašek also hides the fact that he lost his job. He sold his violin to Rendl, told his wife he was going on tour, and left to see his former love, Magda. Danda plans to sell his villa to pay off his debts. Taupe has drunk away all his possessions and gone mad. Rendl finds Mašek at Magda's apartment and blackmails her. He argues with the drunken Danda and mockingly cuts part of his hair. Rendl then tells Mrs. Mašková where her husband is. She visits the apartment, and Mašek hides in the lightwell but falls and kills himself. The Dandas hold an engagement lunch. An embarrassed Danda arrives with his hair partially cut. The atmosphere at the engagement prompts him to decide to voluntarily enter an alcohol treatment program.
