Three Wishes / Tri prani DVD
Synopsis
What chance does a fairy tale have when socialist realism reigns supreme? The sad protagonist of the story, Petr (Rade Marković), a modest lawyer for a construction company, is cramped in a small apartment in Žižkov with his wife and elderly parents, desperately struggling with a lack of money. One day, in a crowded trolleybus, he offers his seat to an old man (Bohuš Záhorský), and is generously rewarded for his good deed. The old man turns out to be a magical grandpa. Petr receives a magical bell and the chance to make three wishes. However, the first two wishes slip through his fingers. For the third wish, the astonished man takes his time to carefully consider. Directors Ján Kadár and Elmar Klos formed a notable creative duo during the 1950s and 1960s. Together, they created eight feature films, with the best among them being "Death Is Called Engelchen" and "The Shop on Main Street," the latter winning the first Oscar for a Czech film in 1965. The film "Three Wishes," co-written with Vratislav Blažek, was made in 1958 but due to ideological criticism, it was not released until five years later. Despite this delay, it quickly became a favorite among audiences.
