The World Belongs to Us / Svet patri nam DVD
Synopsis
In their fourth and final film, Voskovec and Werich stand against fraudsters, careerists, and scoundrels. Directed by Martin Frič in 1937, the film is an adaptation of their play "Rub a líc" with minimal changes. Voskovec and Werich play two rival street vendors who continue their rivalry as sign painters, ultimately joining forces to avoid downfall. Through their eyes, the story unfolds a conflict between the ambitious swindler Dexler and the workers led by Dexler's former colleague Forman, the charming radio announcer Markétka, and the honest factory director Hart. The heroes, portrayed by Voskovec and Werich, act as the driving force in the battle between good and evil. In 1936, as political tensions rose with the imminent threat of Nazism, Voskovec and Werich premiered "Rub a líc" at the Osvobozené divadlo theater, with the optimistic march "The World Belongs to Us" by Jaroslav Ježek becoming the film's title song. The film's plot, calling for adaptation, underwent censorship changes to alter character names and overly transparent fascist uniforms. Released in cinemas six months after the play's premiere, the film's negatives and copies were burned by the Nazis in 1939, yet the spirit and songs of Voskovec and Werich continued to uplift the Czech nation during its darkest times. Re-released in 1947 in a truncated form, the surviving copy still showcases the masterful performances of V+W, delighting audiences to this day.
