Beautiful, whimsical, another world

The Czech Republic (sometimes in collaboration with their friendly neighbour Slovakia) makes fairy tales, but also surreal films set in a world that looks like a not-too-distant historical version of this one, but where magic intersects life. This film is in some ways closer to a fantasy than a fairy tale, yet it also has fairy-like characters. I don't want to spoil the plot of this film. So I'll stop at saying the feeling you get is if you watched a dreamy film in the middle of the night and it feels hazy yet wonderful when you recall it the next day. Wonder-filled and lovely. Thank you for another gorgeous film!

The Watchmaker's Apprentice / Hodinaruv ucen DVD
Synopsis
Over the cradle of the newborn Urban stand three fates: two benevolent spirits speak of wealth and love, while the malevolent one foretells poverty and endless hardships. Which fate will prevail? Urban soon becomes an orphan and is taken in by a miserly master watchmaker who makes him his apprentice. As Urban grows up, he and the watchmaker's daughter, Laura, fall in love and are on the brink of marriage. The master sends Urban on a quest to find the legendary watch that can warn of death. No one knows if the watch even exists, but if Urban fails to bring it back, Laura will never become his wife. The apprentice sets out on a long journey filled with obstacles and tasks that require courage, watchmaking skills, and a good heart. Driven by his love for Laura, Urban is pursued by his three fates, two of whom help him while one seeks to harm him.
