Synopsis
Don't you worry! I've got a knack for a tragic life! is the motto often used by former first-class spa cook Anna Urbanová, a jovial and sincere woman of generous proportions with a tender and sensitive heart, to bolster her courage. She says this not only to herself but even more so to little Věrka, the girl she has taken in as her own, and to Věrka's father, her life partner, Josef Pumplma. Josef, though slight in stature, is a postal worker with a large and courageous spirit. Courage is indeed needed, for the years are 1937-1939, and the clouds of war are gathering over Europe. In their home region, the steel grip of Nazism is tightening, threatening to suffocate the already fragile republic and take away its most precious asset - their home. Forced to leave their homeland in the northern Moravian borderlands, the family departs on the last train from Frývaldov, a train with no return.
