The Smoke / Kour DVD
Synopsis
A peculiar musical about peculiar times... This cult film, subtitled A Rhythmical of the Totalitarian Age, tells the story of a young engineer named Mirek, who arrives at his new workplace with a bizarre and incomprehensible notion – that he wants to work diligently and honestly, causing quite a stir. His completely innocent approach inadvertently sets local history in motion, placing him in the midst of an open rebellion. After his feature debut "Prague Five" in 1988, director Tomáš Vorel once again chose a satirical subject. Based on his student film "ING." from 1985, he created this cult film with Lumír Tuček, co-writer and lyricist from the Recitation Group Forward. The film features the distinctive poetics of the Sklep Theatre, blending the serious with the non-serious, irony with admiration, reality with bizarreness, and actuality with absurdity. The project began during the final days of the communist regime in 1988 and filming started in January 1990. The film premiered in February 1991 but initially went unnoticed in theaters. However, as "Smoke" was rediscovered, it gradually became a timeless fan phenomenon, known for its unique humor, unconventional musical approach, and skeptical view of the revolution, whose outcomes ultimately resemble the old ways.
