Description

The Ruined Shopkeeper / U snedeneho kramu DVD
Synopsis
A tale set in old Prague about a hasty marriage... Ignát Herrmann populated many of his novels and stories with hundreds of vividly characterized small-town figures. However, he rightly considered his most significant work to be the novel "At the End of the Store," which tells the tragic story of the kind-hearted merchant Martin Žemla. The unsentimental yet touching tale of a man whose naive desire for love leaves him at the mercy of the greedy schemes of a neighbor and her daughter is also highly convincing in its film adaptation. This is no surprise, as it was created by a team of individuals who are among the most reputable in the history of Czech cinema. Notable contributors include screenwriter Václav Wasserman, cinematographer Václav Vích, co-composer Karel Hašler, and director Martin Frič. Frič made excellent casting choices, with František Smolík playing Martin Žemla, Antonie Nedošinská and Ela Poznerová as the widow Šustrová and her reckless daughter, and even Vlasta Burian delivering an outstanding performance beyond his usual range as the alcoholic captain Kyllian.
