Description

The Respectable Women of Pardubice / Pocestne pani pardubicke DVD
Synopsis
The historical comedy Počestné paní pardubické is set in the Baroque-era city of Pardubice around 1710. Based on the play "Mistr ostrého meče" by the now-forgotten Karel Krpata, the film humorously critiques the selfishness, false morality, scheming, and hypocrisy of the so-called "respectable" ladies, contrasting them with the "lower" characters such as the wise executioner Zelinger and his spirited wife Rozina. The film features real historical figures like executioner Zelinger, mayor Martin Ignác Kutnohorský, and the eccentric countess Terezie Eleonora Ugartová. Released in autumn 1944, during the heightened censorship of the Nazi occupation, director Martin Frič managed to include many subtle allegorical references that resonated with the Czech audience. The film became one of the most popular of the 1940s and features a notable cast from Czech theater, including the director's daughter, Marta Fričová, and a young Dana Medřická in a minor role.
