Description
The Peasants / Chlopi 5x DVD
Synopsis
Television adaptation of Władysław Stanisław Reymont's most famous novel, realistically depicting the Polish countryside at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and its colourful folklore, which is now disappearing. The complicated, often dramatic story of the Boryna family takes place against a broad moral background of village life, inextricably linked to the rhythm of nature - during the four seasons of the year. Maciej Boryna, a domineering widower, terrorises the household and the servants. Although not young, but "the first farmer in the village", he decides to get married.
The whole village attends the wedding of Maciej and beautiful Jagna, who has turned his head and Boryna's son. Maciej's family tries to assert their property rights. The enraged senior drives his son out of the house with his wife and children. Jagna is criticised for her affair with Antek, the alderman, and her sinful feelings for a young cleric, the organist's son. There is a growing conflict between the inhabitants of Lipiec and the heir. A fight ensues, and the wounded Boryna soon dies in the field, symbolically bidding farewell to his beloved land. The villagers take severe revenge on Jagna.
