synopse
In an attempt to protect their child from the mass extermination of Jews, parents send their son to live with a relative in the countryside somewhere in Eastern Europe. However, the boy's aunt unexpectedly dies, leaving the child to fend for himself in a wild and hostile world governed only by local rules, prejudices, and superstitions. His struggle for literal physical survival during the war is later replaced by another battle—a battle he is not even aware of—an internal fight with himself, for his soul, and for his future. "The Painted Bird" is a profoundly dramatic story that explores the direct relationship between horror and cruelty on one side and innocence and love on the other. It is the first and most famous novel by Jerzy Kosiński, the author of "Being There" and "Pinball," one of the most significant and distinctive writers of the last century.
