Synopsis
Orders are not to be questioned, not even the senseless ones. Towards the end of World War I, Austrian soldiers on the Russian front are heavily decimated. After all the field officers die in battle, the stern Corporal Hoferik (V. Müller) takes command, maintaining their position despite the pointless loss of lives. His blind devotion to the empire garners contempt from both ordinary soldiers and his superiors. The newly appointed Chief of Staff, the inept General Berger (I. Prachař), arrives at the battlefield with a retinue of officers to personally award Hoferik the Military Merit Medal Signum Laudis (Latin for "Badge of Praise") in an effort to boost troop morale. However, the unit, along with the generals, becomes encircled by Russian forces. The only way back to the Austrian lines is through a forest known only to Hoferik. Leading the officer elite to safety proves to be more difficult than anyone had anticipated. Hoferik has no tolerance for weakness and doubt, not even from the generals.
