The Magic Voice of a Rebel / Magicky hlas rebelky DVD
Synopsis
Singer, signatory, and spokesperson of Charter 77, Marta Kubišová, honorably resisted the communist regime for twenty years. At the age of twenty-seven, her rising career was abruptly halted by the Russian occupation tanks that invaded Czechoslovakia. The likely cause was her song "A Prayer for Marta," which became the anthem of the occupied nation. Marta, a three-time winner of the Golden Nightingale award in 1966, 1968, and 1969 and a sex symbol of the time, made a living by gluing bags together. The stress from the dramatic change in her life and the despair of the normalization period led to her personal tragedy. Despite becoming a target for interrogations and harassment by the State Security, she bore her fate without complaint. In 1989, during the Velvet Revolution, Marta experienced a remarkable comeback that could rival that of any global star. Her "Prayer" was listened to by a full Wenceslas Square, making her a symbol of resistance against the communist totalitarian regime. The film explores her first and second singing careers, unveiling much of her dramatic personal life while also mapping the history of Czechoslovakia in the latter half of the 20th century.
