The Magic of the River / Reka Caruje
Synopsis
Aging Prague businessman and board member Leopold Kohák (František Hanus) is held in high regard by those around him. Few know that he inherited all his wealth and that it is actually his domineering wife (Růžena Šlemrová) who makes all the decisions. Leopold drowns in idleness, finding solace only in memories of his old friend Lebeda (Jaroslav Marvan) and his childhood home by the Sázava River. One day, he reaches his limit. Pretending to have a nervous breakdown, he ostensibly leaves for a foreign spa but instead returns to his birthplace. Miraculously, after a dip in the Sázava, Leopold begins to rejuvenate. A cunning vagabond named Štverylka (Jindřich Plachta) robs him of all his elegant clothes, leaving Leopold to rediscover his true self. Gradually, the weary old man transforms back into the charming young Poldík he once was.

Youthful Years / Mlada leta
Synopsis
The new biographical film by director Krška captures the youth of Alois Jirásek, from his school days at the Broumov gymnasium, the events of the war in 1866, his studies at the university in Prague, his arrival in Litomyšl, and his love for Marie Podhajská, who later became his wife. It also highlights the intensifying conflict with the small-town reactionaries, culminating in a prolonged eye disease. As a counterbalance to the small-town society, the film emphasizes the popular movement inspired by enthusiastic readers of Jirásek's works, ultimately thwarting the reactionaries' plot to silence him. In the end, Jirásek is able to write freely again.
