The Living Scourge / Zivy bic DVD
Synopsis
In 1914, as war breaks out and men head to the front, the remote Slovak village of Ráztoky is left with only the elderly, disabled, and women, including the young and beautiful Eva Hlavajová (E. Vášáryová). Like many other women, Eva is left alone, hoping that her love, Adam Hlavaj (Š. Kvietik), will return home safely. The physically demanding work without any help wears her down. Desperate, she pleads with the local notary, Okolický (M. Huba), to bring Adam back from the war. Okolický exploits the situation and rapes the broken and desperate Eva. He promises to arrange Adam's return but demands she never reveal what happened between them or the father of any resulting child. Months pass, Adam does not return, and Eva gives birth to a daughter. Along with exhausting labor and caring for her child, Eva faces societal scorn as the villagers begin to gossip. Eva reaches her breaking point. This socially critical and anti-war drama, highlighting the impacts of World War I on the Slovak common folk, was directed by Martin Ťapák in 1966, based on Milo Urban's 1927 novel. Ťapák, a native of the Orava region and a professional dancer and choreographer focusing on folk dances, infused the film with lyrical and balladic elements, emphasizing the everyday life and traditions of the Orava village. This is evident in many of his films, such as "Ballad of Vojta's Marina" (1964) and another adaptation of Milo Urban's work, "Cruel Love" (1978).
