The Hussites / Husiti DVD
Synopsis
What if a key passage of our history happened completely differently from what history books try to tell us? What if Master Jan Hus didn't even warm up in Constance, let alone burn? What if Jan Žižka had more than just one healthy eye? Director Pavel Koutský's animated comedy playfully shatters the myths of the Hussite era, placing two incredible bunglers on the pedestal of history instead of the preacher and the military leader. These two unwitting heroes of their time remain unknown. Mlhoš is a penniless nobleman and Záboj has always been poor. Chance and a desire to escape their own problems (mostly with women) brought them together in a Prague tavern. Čeněk of Vartemberk, the highest Czech burgrave, expertly maneuvering between kings Wenceslas IV and Sigismund (though brothers, they deeply hate each other), chooses them as perfect pawns for his cunning chess game, seeking his own greatest benefit. When he hires Mlhoš and Záboj to take the heretical preacher Jan Hus to the Council of Constance, he has no idea that he is setting off an avalanche that might eventually bury even him. Mlhoš and Záboj can't accomplish even the smallest task, compensating with typically Czech cunning and a knack for madcap improvisation, which significantly influences the course and outcome of the Hussite wars. Hus, Žižka, and indeed all of history are in for a surprise.
