Description
The Hangman / Majster Kat DVD
Synopsis
He wields an axe like no other and is not one to be angered lightly. Set along the Danube during the Turkish occupation of Slovak territory, this story chronicles the relentless rivalry and hatred between two former best friends, Bratislava fisherman Richardus and executioner Emil Targo. Initially willing to lay down their lives for each other, their bond disintegrates over their love for the same woman, who nearly ends up in the harem of a local pasha. Emil's boastfulness and penchant for alcohol lead him to betray his friend and deceitfully rob him of his love. The hatred between the two men is so profound that it extends to their children years later. This 1966 Slovak historical drama, directed by Slovak cinema classic Páľo Bielik, was not warmly received by contemporary critics, as it was primarily seen as a crowd-pleasing adventure spectacle. Vlado Müller (Emil) and Štefan Kvietik (Richardus) delivered powerful performances as the irreconcilable foes.
