The Eleventh Commandment / Jedenacte prikazani DVD
Synopsis
The Eleventh Commandment is a whimsical comedy that ushers in the twentieth century with a burst of laughter, based on the farce by František Ferdinand Šamberk, a founding figure of the National Theatre. The story revolves around the secret marriage of a committed bachelor, intertwining humor with brilliantly crafted situational comedy that has inspired filmmakers over the decades. The first film adaptation, directed by Václav Kubásek in 1925, was based on a New Year's Eve performance at the Vinohrady Theatre. A sound version followed a decade later by Martin Frič, with screenwriting contributions from E.A. Longen and Otakar Vávra. Hugo Haas stars in both versions as the imperial-royal notary Voborský, who betrays his vow never to marry for the love of a charming bourgeois daughter. In Frič's adaptation, Jiřina Štěpničková plays the concealed wife, with comic relief from Jindřich Plachta and Jiří Plachý as the merry companions, Václav Trégl as the eccentric cobbler, and Ella Nollová as his spirited wife.
