Description
The Elementary School / Obecna skola DVD
Synopsis
Elementary School is a charming, colorful, and humorous Czech comedy by director Jan Svěrák. In his feature debut, Svěrák builds on his success from his student film "Ropáci," which earned him a Student Academy Award. Written by his father, Zdeněk Svěrák, as an autobiographical reflection on his childhood, the film infuses nostalgia with humor, wisdom, and a tender understanding of human frailties. The plot unfolds in a boys' classroom on the outskirts of Prague in the first year after the nation's liberation, where the teacher, Mrs. Maxová, is driven to a nervous breakdown, replaced by the stern and enigmatic Mr. Igor Hnízdo. Hailed as a war hero, his true past is dubious, but his impact on the class is undeniable. The film marks a notable return for Jan Tříska after a 13-year exile and features performances from renowned Czech actors. It was nominated for an Academy Award in 1992.
