Description
The Devil's Trap / Dablova past DVD
Synopsis
The film ballad by director František Vláčil is a loose adaptation of Alfred Technik's novel The Mill on the Po River. It bears all the hallmarks of Vláčil's distinctive directorial style. Set in the first half of the 18th century, during a period when the Catholic Church exerted extraordinary efforts toward gradual recatholicization and increasing its influence, the story follows the search for "heretics" to strengthen its power over the ignorant masses. The narrative unfolds in the karst region somewhere in Moravia, a landscape full of enchantment and ancient legends. Even about the miller Spálený, his enemies spread rumors that he is in league with hell. However, the miller simply understands the language of nature and knows the secrets of the subterranean river that powers his mill. He clashes with a priest, a fanatical but rational messenger of God, who is determined to destroy the miller by any means necessary. The film captivates viewers with excellent performances, especially Miroslav Macháček as the priest and Vítězslav Vejražka as the miller, as well as the atmospheric cinematography by Rudolf Milič.
