Is this made in this world or a window on another?

This film takes the gorgeous, magical look of Czech fairy tales to yet another level. The Czech Republic is a wizard in cinematography, the backdrops are always luscious, the castles and palaces keep coming and the magic is so palpable that after watching only fairy tales from the far country, my family and I have this notion that the Republic is actually some fairy tale world, with these films being records of what happens/happened there. My father should know better as he visited Prague briefly for work decades ago, and he said it was a country of the real and modern world. But the films are so convincing and so thick with authentic fairy tale atmosphere, that I can't help thinking that together with its sister Slovakia, the Czech Republic is some vestige of a magical world and still has princesses and princes to cobblers meeting & marrying each other all the time, with the underworld intersecting here, and dragons casting their shadow there. It's a testament to how flawlessly they make these films that even reality finds it hard to intrude on the impression it gives. I love them all, thanks to CzechMovie for allowing us to access this world of perfected filming of fairy tales.

Description

The Devil's Bride / Certova nevesta DVD
Synopsis
In a kingdom where the king only goes hunting, the impatient queen implores Saint Crispin for a child. When her patience wears thin, she turns to the devil, who lives nearby in an old dilapidated mill, and soon the queen gives birth to a baby girl. The little princess grows up alongside Stephen, the son of the queen's chambermaid, and they eventually fall in love. However, when it is revealed that the queen has signed a contract with the devil, and the princess is to become Lucifer's bride on her eighteenth birthday, the king arranges a ball where Stephen is supposed to become engaged to a prince from another land, thus escaping her fate. One of the suitors is Lucifer himself, whom the princess rejects. He curses her to appear as a specter every night on the castle terraces. Stephen decides to rescue her and engages in a battle against hell. With his courage and, above all, the power of his love, he completes three tasks set by the devil. In the final task, he even outwits Lucifer himself and frees his beloved princess from the power of hell. Both of them then embark on a beautiful and fairy-tale life together.
