Synopsis
Set at the beginning of the last century in a poor mountainous region, our heroes live in silent endurance and struggle to claim their right to a sliver of contentment and happiness. Both outsiders in a rural setting, they are not fully integrated with the world of the long-established locals who inherit their harsh fate from generation to generation... Adam (R. Holub) is a taciturn loner, evidently struggling with ordinary social interaction, shunning people, and refusing to step out of his solitude. He silently resents his severely ill mother (V. Zawadská), whose reckless past life and disordered private affairs have marked him as an outcast. Without a word, he sells their only valuable possession—a cow—to afford soothing medicine for his mother. Róza (A. Mihulová) is young and sociable, eager to find at least a somewhat kindred spirit, and thus somewhat assertively forces her way into Adam's home. Initially, he rudely drives her away, but gradually they grow closer. Róza is pregnant, and their cohabitation is eventually blessed by the priest. But as the old saying goes, misfortune does not walk the mountains, but rather among people...
