The Bells Toll For The Barefooted / Zvony pre bosych DVD
Synopsis
In the midst of war, human compassion can still be found. A Slovak war film set in the high snow-covered mountains, telling the story of two partisans, a young German soldier, and a bartender. As the end of the war approaches, German troops begin to withdraw from occupied territories. However, small skirmishes still rage high in the Slovak mountains between retreating Nazis and partisans. In one such skirmish, partisans Ondrej and Stašek find themselves, having shot two Germans in a firefight and capturing a young soldier named Hans. They decide to take him to their headquarters so that he can be interrogated and dealt with properly by their command. However, after an exhausting journey, they discover that their headquarters has been burned down, and their command is now located who knows where. Ondrej and Stašek are thus trapped in the snow-covered mountains with Hans. Hans finds himself in a situation where escape into the unknown mountains could be fatal for him, so he is forced to entrust his life to his captors. The search for headquarters thus turns into a desperate journey through the unpredictable wilderness, where death is always close at hand, just like the German tank unit led by a ruthless lieutenant. And in the mountain silence, the distant tolling of the church bell begins to echo louder and louder for the group... Directed by Stanislav Barabáš, the film is based on a screenplay by Ivan Bukovčan and explores the absurdity and cruelty of war, which causes pain to everyone regardless of their age, status, or flag. However, it also presents a humanistic message about the meaning of existence, compassion, and the value of human life even among enemies. This film was withdrawn from distribution after 1969 and reappeared only after 1989.
