The Beggar's Opera / Zebracka opera DVD
Synopsis
The Beggar's Opera is an adaptation of Václav Havel's play of the same name, brought to the stage by director Jiří Menzel in 1990 at the Činoherní klub theater. The well-known theme of totalitarian mechanisms was previously explored by John Gay in 1728 and later by Bertolt Brecht. Set in the 1920s, the story could easily unfold in any era. The play features precise dramatic arcs and lengthy, dense monologues. Jiří Menzel's work involved visualizing the source material and necessary text editing. The sequence of scenes is partially modified. The atmosphere, blending theater and reality, is foreshadowed by an animated curtain under the opening credits. By combining Havel's brilliant text with Menzel's cinematic artistry, the result is a work that both entertains with its playfulness and captivates with its atmosphere.
