Synopsis
The release of the book The Art of Loving was a major event in Poland in the late 1970s, as it was the first Polish work to openly address and popularize human sexuality. Its author, the respected gynecologist Michalina Wisłocka (1921–2005), faced significant challenges in publishing such information, encountering resistance from communist party officials, the Catholic Church, conventional society, and especially male chauvinism. However, she eventually gained crucial allies among wives, mothers, lovers, and women in general. This led to topics of sexuality, including basic issues like conception and contraception, becoming accessible in mainstream literature. The film "The Art of Loving," inspired by Wisłocka's life, focuses not only on her struggle to publish the book but also provides a comprehensive portrayal of her dramatic personal life and romantic entanglements. Initially depicted as a determined fighter and eccentric doctor, Wisłocka is gradually revealed as a loving woman willing to make significant sacrifices for love. The filmmakers succeeded in presenting a powerful personality constantly challenging societal conventions while also creating a compelling love story, enhanced by humorous scenes and excellent performances by well-known actors, adding to the film's appeal.
