Synopsis
Parisian bon vivant Maurice Fadinard, financially destitute at forty, faces marriage to the inexperienced but wealthy Helenka, daughter of greengrocer Nonancourt, as his only solution. On his wedding day, Fadinard meets his mistress one last time in the woods. His horse inadvertently consumes the straw hat of another lady, Anais Beauperthuis, who is there with her lover, Lieutenant Emile. To avoid returning to her jealous husband without her hat, Emile demands immediate restitution from Fadinard. Even Anais accompanies him to Fadinard's apartment. Chaos and misunderstandings ensue as Fadinard grapples with attending to his bride and her extensive family, or dealing with the enraged Emile. Neither party is willing to wait, and the crucial question remains: where in the entire city can an identical straw hat be found?
