Squandered Sunday / Zabita nedele DVD
Synopsis
Lieutenant Arnošt spends his days in the fortress town of Josefov, returning home only briefly for his mother's funeral. One Sunday, he wakes up in his dingy lodging penniless and hungover, with vague recollections of last night's drinking and disputes with Maria, his occasional lover and bar waitress who aspires to marry him despite his often harsh treatment of her. The day unfolds with Arnošt venting his frustrations during a routine inspection at a military warehouse and culminates in a heated argument with Maria. That evening, he returns to a room containing a small bouquet from a child he had shown kindness to and his service pistol. This narrative, directed by Drahomíra Vihanová and based on Jiří Křenek's novella, paints a stark portrait of one man's moral and physical decay in a suffocating social environment, reflecting a decadent and pessimistic view of the socialist regime. The film remained unreleased in cinemas for two decades due to its critical perspective.
