This five-part saga of two entrepreneurial families set during the peak of our national revival, based on the novel by Vladimír Neff, begins in 1859 and ends with the opening of the National Theatre in 1881. This memorable series is among the most valuable works in the Czech Television archive. It was created by two prominent television figures – screenwriter Otto Zelenka and director František Filip. Work on the scripts began before the Spring of 1968, and the series first aired in the autumn of that year. Affected and humiliated by the events of August and the post-August developments, viewers found solace, encouragement, and hope in this historical series. In its premiere year, the series surprised with its quality, impeccable craftsmanship, and a stunning showcase of acting performances. Today, 37 years later, Jiří Vala as Martin Nedobyl, Slávka Budínová as Valentýnka, Iva Janžurová and Jiřina Jirásková as the “Spinning Wheels” - Hana and Bětuše Váchovy, Vladimír Ráž, and Gabriela Vránová as Born and Líza return to viewers as representatives of intimately known and beloved characters.
